Inaugural Old Boys Basketball Game
The basketball season is nearly upon us and the senior basketball squad has been getting into their pre-season work. They have been training hard and recently played a pre-season game v Rotorua Boy’s High School, as well as the inarguable old boys' game.
Old boys came from far and wide to be part of this event, included Cowen Finch (the first Breakers development player to come from HBHS), Weston Craig (who captained the first Lions basketball team), Jacob Douglas, Curtis Nicholson and Tamaki Courtney (who were in the Lions team that placed sixth in the national competition). This was an event to celebrate the HBHS Basketball Programme, which, in its earliest form, was headed by our own current Headmaster. The old boys mixed with the older boys to share stories and experiences of their time studying and playing basketball at HBHS. There was a special appearance on court by Mr. McTamney who showed his skill to a delighted audience. It was a great day shared by all the old boys and was for some the first time they saw our new Gym facility. I would like to thank everyone who made it a special day.
Mr Doug Courtney, Master in Charge of Basketball

Daniel Krippner (Year 13), Duncan Barnard (Year 13) and Zach Schuster (Year 11) recently competed in the Central North Island Regional Indoor Rock Climbing competition. Daniel placed second in Round 1 (Rotorua), 2 (Tauranga) and 3 (Hamilton) in the Opens category. Zach place nineth in Round 2, and sixth in Round 3 in the U16 category, while Duncal placed sixth in Round 3.
The competitions consist of two qualification climbs, where competitors score points depending on how high up the wall they progress. The top eight competitors then go through to the final and the climber that gets the furthest wins. This sport is developing a strong national following, and any student who is interested in getting involved should contact Daniel Krippner in the first instance.

During the first week of the holidays, a team of nine students travelled up to Auckland to participate in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Inline Hockey Championships.
The Tournament started off with a bang as we beat Macleans College 7 - 1 in the opening game. In the following two games we suffered narrow defeats to last year’s runners-up, Keri Keri High School and Francis Douglas Memorial College. This sent us into the second division Plate Semi-Final where we won 10 - 1 against Waihi College.
We then played our greatest rivals New Plymouth Boys’ High School in the Plate Final. We managed to pull off a great victory which meant that we would retain the Plate for the second consecutive year. This also meant that we were placed fifth overall.
On behalf of the team I would like to thank Miss Kueh for helping organise the trip and for showing such dedication towards Inline Hockey, also Mark Leishman for helping coach the team and to Alana Jordaan for managing the team with such dedication.
Shayne Jordaan
Sports Captain for Inline Hockey

HBHS Teacher in Charge of Inline Hockey Ms Nicola Kueh shares her report of the team's silver medal winning efforts at the New Zealand Youth Games last weekend:
The team battled through four games on the Saturday with 3 wins and a high-scoring 8 - 8 draw, putting the team in 2nd place behind Nelson College heading into semi-finals on Sunday. The team played well against local rivals Fraser High School, winning 3 - 0. This put the team into the finals to play for the trophy. Unfortunately team captain Angus Hamilton-Horne was out with a fractured arm from the semi-finals. The team was determined to step up against Francis Douglas Memorial College (from New Plymouth). Spirits were high and at full time the score was 2 - 2. (Cont)
