John Prentice, HBHS Master Gardener

5th Oct 2010, 12:15pm

Everyone seeing the HBHS school grounds at the moment is likely to be struck by the profusion of new spring growth. The gardens are looking particularly lush at the moment, and it is clear that the efforts of John Prentice, our fulltime school gardener, are paying off for everyone as we enjoy a fragrant, visually arresting outdoor environment. There is a unifying structure to the plantings, and the boys are careful while they are on the grounds not to damage the low-lying sections. This (thanks to John’s efforts) is because so many of them are involved in the garden’s development…

Josiah Natzke wins New Zealand Motocross Title

8th May 2013, 3:33pm

HBHS has another national champion, this time in Motocross. Josiah Natzke (pictured on the right) picked up his latest trophy during the April school holidays. Teacher in Charge of Motocross, Mr Nathan Vassella, reports on the competition...

The New Zealand Junior Motocross Championships were held in New Plymouth during the school holidays. The championships were held over three days with each rider having to qualify and compete in five races. Josiah Natzke, a Y10 Hamilton Boys’ High School student, rode extremely well and won all of his races by a considerable margin. He now holds a National Motocross title in the 12-14 year old 125cc class. Jacob Steel (pictured on the left), a Y12 Hamilton Boys’ High School student, also had a very successful campaign and rode hard to secure second place in the 13-16 year old 85/150cc class. Both of these results are very impressive due to the depth of competition in attendance at the event. Hamilton Boys’ High School congratulates both of these students on their excellent achievements.

Junior Worlds Update - Scott Creighton

2nd Aug 2011, 12:05pm

Hi everyone

The last few days have been busy with a race, packing our gear, cleaning the house in Belgium and travelling to Switzerland.

We had our last race in Belgium on Thursday. It was anice day with a little bit of wind, although that didn’t do much to the race as most of the course was through streets in town. We were supposed to do a 70k race on a 2km circuit but we had a change of plan as it didn’t start until 5.30pm. Instead we signed on at another race (92 km)round a 6.5 km circuit with turns all over the place, weaving in and out of buildings in a small town called Geel. It turned out that this was a bigger race as well, with 85 starters. Two of my team mates, Hayden and Dylan, got in an early break and got out to a good lead. Half way through the race we other 3 New Zealand riders found ourselves off the front without planning to be, so we put the pressure on and created a chase group with one other Belgium rider.  We stayed away and got within 20 seconds of the front two. We tried to take out the top 5 for our last race in Belgium, but managed top 4 and 6th with me getting 3rd. This is still a great result.

Jury and Simpson Triumph in National Debating

31st May 2011, 11:24am

HBHS students Christopher Jury (Yr 11) and Thomas Simpson (Yr 12) were joined by Hillcrest High student Kayla Grant to defeat  Auckland and win the Russell McVeagh New Zealand Schools’ Debating Champs in the Grand Final held at Parliament on Monday morning.
Waikato wins New Zealand Schools Debating Champs
The Waikato team successfully affirmed the motion “That New Zealand needs Don Brash”, winning in a unanimous decision.
Christopher Bishop, the President of the New Zealand Schools’ Debating Council which organises the tournament, said that the Grand Final was a closely contested and very humorous debate on a highly relevant topic.
“Waikato argued that New Zealand is in a perilous economic position, and Dr Brash’s ideas about reducing the size of government would help reduce our debt levels and improve our growth rate. They argued their case with great passion and wit and narrowly defeated the spirited challenge of Auckland”, he said.
