Luke Annan receives Waipa Tennis Award

Year 12 Luke Annan has taken out the Waipa Tennis Academy Junior Sportsperson of the Year Award.  The 16-year-old Te Awamutu Melville Cup teacm member went through the interclub season unbeaten in all of his singles matches playing at No. 2 - helping his team to become joint winners of the cup with Otoro hanga.

Annan becomes the twelfth recipient of the Quentin Wallace Trophy.  In presenting the award to Annan, Wallace commented that the teenager had not only impressed him as a player, but also by encouraging the younger members of his team.  "Luke has proven to be a responsible person and player, always well mannered and courteous, on and off the court."

Annan was runner-up in the under-16 boys' section of the Te Awamutu Sub Association junior tournament in November.  The Hamilton Boys' High School student's other sporting interests are squash and rugby.

Maadi Gold for Under 18 Novice Pair

It's the first of the two finals days at the 2014 Maadi Cup Regatta at Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel, and HBHS have their first gold medal, courtesy of Under 18 Novice Pair Jacob Prier and Rhys Bain.  Congratulations to these boys and to coaches Mr Don Baron and Mr Ivan Pavich.  More results to come!

Maatangi Whenua 2011 Competition

This competition is open to students who study Geography at Year 11, whose school is a member of the New Zealand Geographical Society Inc. HBHS visited Tauranga Girls’ College for the WBOP Regional Round of this year’s competition. Our boys competed against 15 other teams over 9 rounds. The competition tested student’s knowledge of places, landmarks, geographical features and environments, and geography in the news. Our team won by the closest of margins, and we are very proud and delighted to have retained the Regional Trophy that we have now won three years in a row. The team comprising Lyndon Dearlove, Drikus Conradie and Donghyun Kim will have the opportunity to travel to Wellington on the 3rd and 4th of September to compete in the National Finals and defend our National Title.

Magic and Illusion at the Year 9 Assembly

Dave Upfold, internationally recognised illusionist, magician and hypnotist, pictured here with members of the Art, Literature and Culture Tour, dazzled the Year 9 Assembly today with a taste of his magic and comedy.  Dave will be performing his full show in the School Hall next Thursday 21 March at 7pm as a fundraiser for the tour group, who will be travelling to the UK and Europe in the April school holidays.  As an added bonus, Dave gave the tour group an interesting insight into some of the techniques he uses during his shows.

Malhar Soni, 'Design for a Cause' Winner

Malhar Soni (Yr 13)  won the Canon 'Design for a Cause' competition recently.  His work featured in the New Zealand College Herald.  Contestants were required to design a t-shirt to promote a deserving cause.  The prize is a day with Canon's advertising agency, Ballantyne Taylor.  Canon's judge said the design was of an extremely high standard and could easily be executed into production.

What is Art Design?

Art Design is a course offered in Year 13 at Hamilton Boys' High School.  It involves two topics: 'investigating and using ideas and methods in the context of drawing study in design', and 'the production of original work within design to sho extensive knowledge of art-making methods and ideas.'  The work is folio-based, and course entry is at the discretion of the Head of Faculty.

Many Medals for HBHS Swimmers

HBHS excelled at the recent NZ Short Course Championships (25m SCM), held during the first week of the school holidays in Wellington, 30/9 - 4/10/2012.

Fairfield swim club had a group of 18 swimmers attend the NZ Short Course Championships in Wellington. There were some fantastic results throughout the meet. HBHS was well represented by Carter Edgecombe, Leon Arcus, Jesse Reynolds, Josh Ion, Nathan Edwards, Ashley Townsend, Sean Haisley, Angus Campbell, Tyler Ellis, Nathan Edwards, Leyton Bradford, and Connor Egan.

Jesse Reynolds secured 6 Gold medals and breaking 4 current Paralympic NZ records in the S9 classification. This included smashing his current 400 free record by 8 seconds to 4:35.51 and his 200 Individual medley by 6 seconds to 2:33.30. These results now allow Jesse to qualify for the World Short course (multi-class) Champs in Canada in 2013.
