Mid-year examinations for all Year 9 students and for Year 10 students not doing NCEA Level 1 subjects begin this Friday 7 June. Therefore, the HBHS Academic Committee and Year 12 and 13 Academic Scholars are offering junior students tuition and help in order to prepare these students for what may well be their first ever formal examination. We encourage any junior student to come along and ask questions and get one-on-one help in any subject, as the senior students have been through all of this before and know exactly what to expect. Watch out in the Daily Notices for times and locations.

Students from Hamilton Girls' and Hamilton Boys' High Schools performed wonderfully over the last week, bringing the history of popular music to their annual joint stage production. Rock It featured music and dance from the 1940s, including the Andrews Sisters and the Glen Miller-big band era, as well as stars of the 1960s and later, like Rolling Stones and Beach Boys, Queen, Michael Jackson, Blues Brothers and the Back Street Boys.
The students started work on the production in term 2. The show was extremely vibrant, and featured the HBHS Jazz Express and Gypsy Pickers, who won gold at the Waikato Music Competition on Monday.
The show was lead by HBHS Head of Music Joanna Dickinson, the school's Head of Dance Vicki Wenham and Ms Margie Wynne-Jones as director.

It was three from three for the HBHS top rugby teams this weekend, with two Super 8 titles won and a finals berth in the Waikato 1st XV Division 1 secured for next weekend. First up, the 2nd XV put Hastings Boys' High School 2nd XV away 37 - 5 to secure the Super 8 win. Next up, on the Number 1 field, the HBHS 3rd XV eventually came away winners over Matamata College 1st XV 14 - 9, thus making history by getting through to the Division 1 finals for the first time ever. Finally, the HBHS 1st XV were far too strong for Hastings Boys' High School 1st XV, and the team rounded off the afternoon with a crushing 76 - 11 win, therefore retaining the Moascar Cup. Congratulations to all of these teams on their fine wins.

The HBHS Hockey 2nd XI went to this year’s Winter Tournament in Wellington with a new team; only four players remained from last year’s second tier champion’s side, including Captain Scott Fookes. The team established themselves this year as hard working young men who were determined to succeed. The large marjority of this group were under 15, but this did not impede their progress. It was exciting for the Coach (Mrs Shah) and Manager (Mr Godsiff) to realise that they had a good balance of players who were willing to work as one unit.
The first HBHS game of the Galletley Cup tournament was played against Wellington College. We won this 1-0, in a well contested match. The second game versus Alfriston College was a 3-1 win to us.

With the HBHS 1st and 2nd XV's not playing today due to Super 8 commitments, it was the 3rd and 4th XV's who represented the school in Waikato rugby this weekend. Both teams played at St John's College in perfect conditions today, with the 4th XV drawing first blood, beating the St John's 2nd XV 29 - 24. The HBHS 3rd XV (pictured in action at right) then took on the St John's 1st XV, and with Kane Sarjeant and Poasa Cama running in tries, HBHS led 12 - 6 at half time. The mounting penalty count proved costly in the second half, with St John's Joe Tourelle making HBHS pay for any infringement in their own half. St John's eventually won the match 20 - 12.
