HBHS win Waikato Debating Competition

6th Jun 2012, 11:40am

The Waikato regional debating competition was held at Waikato University on Sunday.  The contest began at 8.30am and continued until 7.00pm at night.  We fielded a senior team comprised of Scott Cameron, Thomas Simpson and Christopher Jury. They had prepared a debate for the first round, negating the moot ‘New Zealand should impose performance pay on teachers’, which they convincingly won.  This was followed by three more debates prior to the break; these were also won in an emphatic fashion.

The HBHS team met St Peter’s in the semi-finals, negating the proposition that endangered species should be farmed.  This was won by Boys’ High on a split decision, which allowed us through to a final against John Paul College, of Rotorua.  We affirmed the moot that beauty pageants did more harm than good, which won HBHS the title.

HBHS win Waikato Squash Title

5th Jul 2013, 7:16pm

Teacher in Charge of Squash, Mr Simon Devitt reports on this recent addition to the HBHS trophy cabinet...

On Wednesday the 3rd of July, Hamilton Boys’ High School sent our three best squash players to compete in this one day event. The team progressed easily through the early stages of the tournament before facing St Peter’s College in the final. The team consisting of Angus MacDonald, Fergus McKinnon and Callum Burkes (Captain of Squash) played admirably and with great composure. Callum played one of his best matches to end up winning against a player graded much higher than him. They ended up winning 3 - 0 which secured us the overall win and the title of Waikato Secondary Schools Team Champion for the second consecutive year.

HBHS wins back 'The Boot'

3rd Aug 2010, 10:54am

HBHS 1st XV scored a convincing win over Tauranga Boys’ High School on Saturday, in front of a supportive crowd and the cameras of Sky TV.  The final score was 30 - 6, which means that ‘The Boot’ has returned to HBHS after a brief sojourn on the coast.

‘The Boot’ (pictured right) is a trophy constructed from one of the rugby boots of Don Clarke, a legendary Waikato sportsman.

Donald Barry Clarke (10 November 1933–29 December 2002) was a New Zealand rugby union player who played 89 times (31 of these were test matches) as an All Black from 1956 until 1964. He was best known for his phenomenal goal kicking ability that earned him the nickname "The Boot".

HBHS Wins Inaugural Chiefs Knock-Out Cup

28th May 2012, 1:08pm

Hamilton Boys’ High School won the inaugural Chiefs Knock-Out Cup final against Manurewa at Waikato Rugby Stadium on Friday evening.  The final score was 32 – 3.  Coach Greg Kirkham commented on the win:

We had a good game on Friday.  We had played Manurewa in a pre-season game that was somewhat one-sided, but the make-up of the Manurewa team changed with boys back from summer tournament.  We knew that they had beaten Wesley, and that Wesley had beaten Rotorua Boys’ High School.

We prepared for a tough game – the Manurewa team are big boys, but we played specifically to our structure, gaps opened up and we scored a few tries.  One particularly pleasing thing was that the patterns we’ve been developing over the last few weeks are starting to come in, now.  Our structure is looking pretty sound.  There are still things to work on, as every coach will say, but we’re happy to have had this particular win.

HBHS played Gisborne Boys’ High School in the tense final of the recent Super 8 Touch Tournament, ending the game with a 5-all draw. Under these circumstances, a player is dropped from each team every two minutes, until one of the remaining players scores. Normally there are six players on each side, but the teams were down to four apiece before Tyler Meagher (Yr 12) stepped up and won the game. The suspense was considerable, as Gisborne Boys’ took out this particular competition last year under similar circumstances.
