HBHS Welcome Back World Champs

11th May 2011, 2:00pm

Hamilton Boys' High School welcomed back the 1st XV today as winners of the Sanix World Youth Rugby Tournament.  The team and our guests were welcomed by the Jazz Band, and the Kapa Haka group.  The Headmaster Mrs Hassall spoke, as well as the current Chair of the Waikato Rugby Union.  The following is a speech delivered by Nigel Hotham, Head Coach of HBHS 1st XV.

Thank you for the opportunity to share a few of my thoughts on the success of the 1st XV in Japan.

Some might think that travelling back to Fukuoka for the 3rd time to represent our school, province and country in the 12th Sanix World Schools Tournament, was going to feel a little repetitious…that this tour may struggle to compare to the previous occasions. In contrary, this trip at least matched and in many ways surpassed the previous tours.

The drama this year began long before we met at Auckland airport. The horrendous earthquake, tsunami and nuclear plant crisis that struck Japan, placed the tournament in jeopardy. With several international teams pulling out, a tough decision eventually had to be made and we thank our headmaster, parents and players for the courage to make the decision we did to go. It was only when in Japan that we began to understand what this meant to the Japanese. We were continually thanked on a daily basis for attending, by the organisers, coaches, players and spectators. We were able to relate closely to their loss, as we had also felt the impacts recently of a similar natural disaster in Christchurch. Getting back to normality was very important for this country and for every Japanese player, coach and supporter, this tournament was to be the highlight of their rugby career and a small ‘ray of sunshine’ in what had been a traumatic year.

HBHS win 1st XV championships in a come from behind thriller!

14th Sep 2013, 3:34pm

The HBHS 1st XV are New Zealand National 1st XV champions, beating St Kentigern's College 12 - 10 in a come-from-behind victory courtesy of three Bryn Gatland penalty goals and a drop goal minutes before the full time whistle.  Gatland was named Player of the Match, and HBHS hooker Raukawa Neems was named Player of the Championship, after HBHS put an end to the St Kentigern's 52 match winning streak.  HBHS were down 10 - 3 at half time, but sustained attacking pressure forced the mistakes by the St Kentigern's team, which Gatland was able to capitalise on.  Congratulations to the team, who were cheered on by a huge crowd despite the rain, and the 1st XV would like to thank their sponsors Lodge Real Estate, Pacific Auto Carriers, Jacanna Freight, Inside Running Sports Management, Kukri Apparel, Grassroots Trust and Heartland Bank.

HBHS Win 2012 Matt Allen Hockey Trophy

5th Jun 2012, 11:21am

On Wednesday 30th May our Hamilton Boys’ High 1st X1 hockey team played the annual Matt Allen Memorial Trophy game against St Paul’s Collegiate 1st X1. The game is played in memory of the late Matt Allen.  Matt was a hostel student at Boys’ High and keen hockey player who died tragically. The trophy is played for during the first meeting of the two teams every year and is always fiercely contested.  This year was no different.

The game was played at the St Paul’s hockey turf and with their hostel only a stone’s  throw away, there was sure to be plenty of St Paul’s support.   Not to be out done, our loyal army of supporters made sure they were heard, along with the much appreciated presence of our entire hostel, the 1st XV rugby team, Mrs Hassall, HBHS senior executive, and all of the teachers.
