HBHS Win 2012 Matt Allen Hockey Trophy
On Wednesday 30th May our Hamilton Boys’ High 1st X1 hockey team played the annual Matt Allen Memorial Trophy game against St Paul’s Collegiate 1st X1. The game is played in memory of the late Matt Allen. Matt was a hostel student at Boys’ High and keen hockey player who died tragically. The trophy is played for during the first meeting of the two teams every year and is always fiercely contested. This year was no different.
The game was played at the St Paul’s hockey turf and with their hostel only a stone’s throw away, there was sure to be plenty of St Paul’s support. Not to be out done, our loyal army of supporters made sure they were heard, along with the much appreciated presence of our entire hostel, the 1st XV rugby team, Mrs Hassall, HBHS senior executive, and all of the teachers.
Having already beaten Auckland Grammar earlier in the day, our boys were definitely tired, but were determined not to let this affect our game. With the game plan set, we dominated from the start, pressuring the St Paul’s defensive line and not relieving this pressure for the whole game. First half goals from Jonty Keaney, Nic Woods and Sterling Morgan made sure we went into half time in the lead and in control. We expected St Paul’s to come out fighting and they did, but our continued dominance was too much, as Nic Woods netted his second and Alex Wood added another goal to our total. We claimed a well deserved 5-0 victory and I am pleased to report that the Matt Allen Memorial is back in our trophy cabinet, after a two year absence.
