HBHS Win Medals in Waikato Culinary 'Fare'
On Thursday 28th June, twenty two Year 12 and 13 food technology students travelled to WINTEC to participate in the Waikato Culinary Fare. In this competition they competed against other secondary schools in either “static” or “live” food competitions. For the static competition the students made decorated cupcakes or a cold dessert at school the day before and took them along for judging on the morning of the competition. For the live competition, students chose to enter either a creative pizza or soup category. The other live category entered was “mystery box” in which a team of two, cooks and serves a main course for two people within one hour. The difficulty factor for the students is that until the morning of the competition, they do not know what ingredients will be in their mystery box and so cannot practice or choose a recipe until the morning of the competition.
It was a tough competition against many other experienced school students, but overall the Boys' High students did very well. In the static competition, Jonas Clarke received a bronze medal for his banoffee pie dessert as well as a gold medal in the live soup competition for his leek, broccoli and blue cheese soup (our very first gold medal over the three years we have been competing). Kane Maxwell also did well to receive a silver medal for his pumpkin soup. In the creative pizza category both Jackson Holmes and Tracy Tang received a silver medal and Jake Divett received a bronze medal. Lastly in the mystery box category, Daniel Lawrence and Callum Douglas received a silver medal each.

Mr Nathan Vassella, Teacher in charge of Motocross, reports on HBHS’s latest success in this fast-growing sport…
On the 22nd of March, 18 HBHS students attended the Hauraki Plains Motocross Tournament. The event was very popular, with over 200 students from 22 Secondary Schools attending. Unfortunately, the extremely dry weather leading up to the event made for very dusty racing conditions. Despite the organiser’s best efforts to water the track, the dust was a lingering issue.
HBHS had a very successful day of racing and with the accumulation of every rider’s points we won the event outright. Stand out individual results are as follows: (cont)

HBHS students James Robertson (left) and Regan Kidd (right), also known as "The Udder 2" are the 2013 National Teen Ag Young Farmers title holders. The boys prepared for the Grand Final by working hard as a team and ensured that they had practised the wide range of skills that the competition tested. The challenges included stock judging, tractor safety drills, soil sampling, farm first-aid, a mock scholarship interview and tests on how to identify diseases in animals and find the appropriate treatments. Both boys are heading for Lincoln University once they finish their time at HBHS, and both are keen to continue their involvement in the Young Farmers Programme. James is the Chairman of the HBHS Teen Ag Club, which currently has 20 paid-up members. This group meets regularly and enters agricultural competitions, along with providing volunteer service at both the A & P Show and at Fieldays. HBHS is the first school in the North Island to ever win the national Teen Ag competition. Congratulations to James and Regan on their achievement, and thanks to the Young Farmers website for the photograph of our latest national champions.
