HBHS Wins Inaugural Chiefs Knock-Out Cup

Hamilton Boys’ High School won the inaugural Chiefs Knock-Out Cup final against Manurewa at Waikato Rugby Stadium on Friday evening.  The final score was 32 – 3.  Coach Greg Kirkham commented on the win:

We had a good game on Friday.  We had played Manurewa in a pre-season game that was somewhat one-sided, but the make-up of the Manurewa team changed with boys back from summer tournament.  We knew that they had beaten Wesley, and that Wesley had beaten Rotorua Boys’ High School.

We prepared for a tough game – the Manurewa team are big boys, but we played specifically to our structure, gaps opened up and we scored a few tries.  One particularly pleasing thing was that the patterns we’ve been developing over the last few weeks are starting to come in, now.  Our structure is looking pretty sound.  There are still things to work on, as every coach will say, but we’re happy to have had this particular win.

The next big challenge is Auckland Grammar, who are coming to HBHS on Wednesday.  At the present time they are leading the Auckland competition.  It will be a hard game again, with a quick turn-around from Friday to Wednesday.  Friends of the school, Old Boys and community members are invited to watch us play at 11.30am.
