HBHS played Gisborne Boys’ High School in the tense final of the recent Super 8 Touch Tournament, ending the game with a 5-all draw. Under these circumstances, a player is dropped from each team every two minutes, until one of the remaining players scores. Normally there are six players on each side, but the teams were down to four apiece before Tyler Meagher (Yr 12) stepped up and won the game. The suspense was considerable, as Gisborne Boys’ took out this particular competition last year under similar circumstances.
We have fielded a very young 2010 touch team: three Year 9s played in every game. HBHS had a young team last year as well, so it would appear that we have developed a system that allows players to adapt to our expectations very quickly. This is promising, as HBHS prepares to defend the National title in December.
