12 Personal Bests in 12 Races
Jesse Reynolds has just completed an outstanding six days of competition at the New Zealand Open Championships. Amongst Jesse's most signification personal achievements were twelve personal best times from twelve races (six heats and six finals). Jesse won six gold medals form six finals, gaining two New PNZ S9 Long Course records and broke two others he already held.
As of Monday, after smashing his 400 free time by five seconds at the Opens, Jesse has been invited to compete for Paralympics NZ at the IPC sanctioned Paralympics qualifying meet in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA in May 2012. This has come as an unexpected surprise but it will be a great opportunity for Jesse to compete along with other S9 athletes at a high standard. Paralympics NZ think it will give him some much needed competition and experience in the world circuit. Jesse is now in the Target Rio team from PNZ, so his ultimate target is the 2016 Paralympics in Rio.
The cost for Jesse to go to this meet in the USA is approximately $6000, so his family is now on the fundraising trail. They need to raise $6,000.00 in six weeks. Anyone who is interested in supporting Jesse can contact his mother Tracey at supamum5@xtra.co.nz for details.
1962 HBHS Reunion
On Friday 3rd August, HBHS hosted the 1962 Leavers. It was the first time that we had organized a reunion on a weekday whilst the school was still in session, but it was a fantastic success.
At 10.00am, our Old Boys began to arrive, immediately recognizing old school chums and getting down to the serious business of catching up on 50 years of news. There was a huge buzz as the condensed highlights of each other’s lives were quickly exchanged. It seemed a shame to disturb the connections for morning tea, but the Old Boys were unfazed, eating and talking with enthusiasm. A tour of the school by our Prefects was the high point for most of them, seeing boys dressed much as they would have been all those years ago, learning similar knowledge, in classrooms which were largely unaltered over the last half a century. The gentlemen thoroughly enjoyed talking to our current students, impressed by their politeness and pride in the school.

On Saturday 25 August Hamilton Boys' High School's 1st XI Football team went one step closer to claiming all three trophies in the WSSFA Senior Premier competition with a 1-0 win over arch-rivals St Peters. The win guaranteed the 1st XI its place in the Knockout Final against Cambridge High School on Saturday 22 September. The team has already wrapped up its 12th consecutive Premier League title - an astounding record given the strong footballing competition in the region.
The win last Saturday also meant that St Peters had to hand over the WSSFA Challenge Shield to HBHS captain Gavin Gilbert. A win for Gilbert and his team in the KO Cup final will lock the shield and cup away for another year. The winning goal came from attacking midfielder James Davies. Central midfielder Stefan Krystman also celebrated his 50th cap for the 1st XI with another outstanding performance. The team travels to Nelson on Sunday for the NZSS Football Premier Tournament.
1st XI Football Progress Report
The 1st XI football team plays a crucial National Secondary Schools qualifiying match against Rotorua Boys' High School this Thursday 24 May at HBHS on the No 1 Football field. The team is hoping to extend its unbeaten run in the qualifying stages, after wins against Cambridge High School (5-1) and St Pauls (2-1) and following a tense 3-3 draw against St Peters last Saturday.
A win on Thursday would place the 1st XI in a strong position going into their last qualifying game against Tauranga Boys' College later in the term.
