2010 Dux Reports Back From Otago

29th Jul 2011, 11:39am

The attraction of studying in a University-focused city was the deciding factor in Hamilton Boys' High School 2010 Dux Vidit Singh's decision to head to Dunedin.  The $5,000 University of Otago Dux Scholarship recipient says "Dunedin is a great place to experience student life.  It's almost as if the whole place has been geared up for students."

Vidit was accepted into Otago's sought-after Health Sciences First Year course.  "I wanted to study Medicine and I thought Otago had a relaxed atmosphere, but at the same time a high level of education."  The health Sciences course is a prerequisite for entry to the Otago Medical School and several other disciplines Otago offers, such as Dentistry, Physiotherapy and Pharmacy. Vidit says that he appreciated the way the course's different papers in Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Human Body Systems integrate to make everything about the human body 'fit into place.'

2010 HBHS Head Boy Adam Burn

19th Nov 2010, 7:08am

It has been fantastic to be Head Boy at such a great school. The main responsibilities I’ve undertaken this year have been providing leadership and support for the students and prefects that I work with. There aren’t any set jobs as such, which means that you are at everyone’s service for different things. I’ve had a chance to learn to run meetings effectively, as well as help out where necessary.

The prefects meet every Monday for about half an hour. The bulk of our duties involve organization – organizing Spirit Week, mufti days, interactions with other schools, and the more mundane jobs like litter duty supervision and helping out in the Dean’s room.

Highlights of the year have to include the ball. The ball was great – I really enjoyed going to that; it was a wonderful event.
