'Four Reelz' 5th in National Competition
Over thirty schools fielded quartets for the 2010 Young Singers in Harmony Competition in Hamilton on Friday.'Four Reelz', featuring Takiri Southon, Joshua Fa'agalu, Taylor Glassie and Selu Fotu, represented HBHS with pride, and gained an extremely pleasing fifth place.
This is the first time that HBHS has entered a group in the competition, and the genre is still a relative novelty for the singers. None of the quartet had sung barber shop before term two of this year, but their considerable talent and stage presence appealed to both the judges and the audience. The boys selected barber shop standards 'Goodnight Ladies' and 'Coney Island Baby', and presented these in four-part a cappella harmony. You can watch them perform by using the link on our 15 June 'Latest News' entry.

The national launch of Speedminton was held at Hamilton Boys' High School yesterday. Speed badminton, also known as speedminton, is a badminton variant without a net. Speed Badminton is a new racket game which combines elements from different sports like badminton, squash and tennis.
Today, Speed Badminton is played all around the world. There is no net in between and no prescribed playground, so it can be executed on tennis courts, streets, beaches, fields or gyms. The court consists of two squares of 5.50m (18ft) length. They are fixed opposite to each other at a distance of 12.8m (42ft). Currently, there are tournaments all over the world which are organized in a growing number of clubs. In some countries, associations are already established, for example the German Speed Badminton Association (DSBV) and the Swiss Speed Badminton (SSB). On August 25, 2011 the international Speed Badminton Organization (ISBO) was founded in Berlin. Go to www.speedminton.co.nz for information about local competition.
