2009 Finale/2010 Update: HBHS Premier Touch Team National Champions

During the second week of December the HBHS Premier Touch Team won the Secondary School National Touch Tournament. The team beat Rotorua Boys 5-4 in the final, to become National champions for the second consecutive year.

Day One brought mixed results for the young team; beating St Bedes College 7-4, losing to Hato Paora 6-7 and beating Te Wharekura O Manurewa 9-5. These scores qualified the team for a ‘Top 10’ placing. On Day Two the team showed the improvement required to put them in contention for the title by beating Papanui High School 5-0, Wellington College 9-7, Gisborne Boys’ High School 4-3 and Nelson College 3-2. In the semi-final on Day Three the team produced a dominant display to beat St Peters College (Auckland) 6-3.

The final was a classic encounter between two arch-rivals. The teams went score for score before Hamilton wore down a fading defence, to get out to a 5-3 lead. A final touchdown to Rotorua on the hooter wasn’t enough to stop a jubilant Hamilton team from celebrating the acquisition of another national title.

Five players were named in the tournament team: Henare Hira-Herangi, Chauncy Edwardson, Liston Togia, Jayden Togia and Joseph Webber. Henare Hira-Herangi was named MVP for the tournament. We congratulate the team, coach, manager and support crew (and proud parents) for this impressive feat.
