Trophy stays put as HBHS keeps winning

22nd Jun 2013, 3:38pm

The top three rugby teams all had wins at home today in clear, crisp conditions on fields that had held up remarkably well after a week of heavy rain.  The HBHS 1st XV kept the Moascar Cup safely in Hamilton with a 43 - 10 win over their fellow Chiefs Cup finalists, Rotorua Boys' High School, with the home side running in seven tries.  On the back fields the results were much tighter, with the HBHS 2nd XV battling their way to a 13 - 6 win over Rotorua Boys' High School 2nd XV.  Finally, the 3rd XV (pictured, right) again had to come from behind, with a 12 - 10 win over Matamata College 1st XV after trailing 10 - 5 at half time.  Congratulations to all of the teams.

Two on Top of the World

13th Feb 2014, 1:24pm

HBHS students have certainly been making their mark at a global level over the past few years, and the 2013 IGCSE results have served up not one, but two world-beaters, and they're not even in Year 13 yet!  Christopher Mayo (pictured, left) and Soumil Singh (pictured, right) have scored top of the world in one subject each, and Soumil has also topped New Zealand overall across all of his subjects.  What makes Christopher's results even more extraordinary is that he was invited to sit IGCSE as a Year 10 student (a full year early), and achieved a mark of 99% in Mathematics and 97% in Co-ordinated Science, with his Science mark earning him a first in the world award.  Soumil notched up a collection of marks in the late nineties which were as follows: 96% in Science, 97% in three subjects, Economics, English Literature and Geography, and 99% in Mathematics.  He was placed first in New Zealand for best overall in five subjects, first in New Zealand for Economics, and first in the world for Geography.  We would like to congratulate these students on their exceptional accomplishments, and congratulate and thank their very proud families for all of their efforts and support. Tyran Whyte competed in Wellington for the Kyokushin New Zealand Nationals on August 12th. Kyokushin is full contact fighting. Recently Hamilton Boys’ High School hosted Sensei Tahi Parata as he trained and tutored some of our students – this is Tyran’s Sensei. Tyran won the New Zealand Boys 14 - 17years Light Weight title after a series of fierce bouts.

Bringing home a trophy provided Tyran with a wonderful sense of achievement, justifying all of the training and commitment that this sport requires.

From the eight people that entered this competition in Wellington from Waikato Central Club – seven won their title fights. If you would like to learn more about Kyokushin Karate, ask Tyran, or contact Sensai Parata.
