U15 National Rugby Tournament
This year the National under 15 rugby tournament was hosted by Rotorua Boys’ High School. On the first day of the tournament we faced the challenge of playing two full length games on the same day. In the morning we played Wesley College, needing a good performance to kick start the tournament. Our coaches were happy with the 36-7 victory as we showed some excellent discipline and control, playing in extremely testing, wet, cold and windy conditions. Tayne Tupaea, from lock, scored two magnificent tries from lineout drives. We immediately needed to switch on for our afternoon game against Otago Boys’ High School. This was another outstanding team performance winning 44-0. Once again the forward pack laid the foundation for this victory, as they were expertly guided around the field by our half back Caleb Korteweg.

This year the National under 15 rugby tournament was hosted by Hastings Boys’ High School. On the first day of the tournament we faced the challenge of playing two full length games on the same day. In the morning we played Hastings Boys’ High School, needing a good performance to kick start the tournament. Our coaches were happy with the 39-12 victory as we showed some excellent attacking movements, finished with six great team tries all scored by the backs. Legin Hotham from full back scored the first two of his seven tries he would score through the week. We immediately needed to switch on for our afternoon game against New Plymouth Boys’ High School. This was an amazing team performance winning 103-7, unfortunately letting them on the score board with an intercept try in the last few minutes.

The 2010 Under 55kg A Rugby season kicked off with three combative trial sessions. It was at this stage that their coach Mr De Klerk realized this was going to be a champion team. Without a doubt, the players picked themselves through their actions and their outstanding attitude.
Blessed with a plethora of talent, the coach and support team were able to experiment with positions in order to give all the boys’ satisfactory game time. The team commenced the season, in the three grading games, with comprehensive wins over all. Once the team realized that individualised talent alone wasn’t good enough to be truly successful, Theunis Pieterse (Captain) and Blake Scotland (Vice Captain) brought the group together as an unstoppable unit.
The U55 A team trained hard, putting the success of the team above individual merit, and this became a winning formula. With great determination, they not only won, but won every game by a convincing margin, even acquiring triple figures. They were not always the biggest team on the field; they had some challenges, but they still went on to win the semi-finals and ultimately the grand finals in impressive style to take the Pat Bennett Trophy. Mr De Klerk noted that it has been a pleasure working with assistant and backline coach David Den Hertog, father of the teams First-five.
We congratulate Mr De Klerk’s team, as well as the other four junior sides that went on to contest finals in the last two weeks. It has been a stellar year for Rugby at Hamilton Boys’ High School.
