Waka Ama at HBHS
Waka Ama is a relatively new sport at HBHS, but judging by the performance of the Under 16 team at the recent ActivePost New Zealand Secondary Schools' Waka Ama Championships held in Rotorua, it is one with a very promising future. The crew, pictured at right with their silver medals in the 500m event, were less than a second behind the winning team at the regatta, where a record number of teams competed during summer tournament week. Congratulations to the crew of Rawiri Southon, Te Waikaiti Southon, Te Rangi McGrath, Nicholas Symons, Te Tawhana Bramley and Jayden Hokianga. and the coach Mr Paul McGrath.
Thanks to ActivePost New Zealand Waka Ama for supplying the photograph.

23 June 2010, Middle School Assembly

Warren Gatland:
I just want to say ‘thank you’ to Mrs Hassall. She was my favourite English teacher.

HBHS Old Boy, Coach of the Welsh National Rugby Team, and now series-winning Coach of the British and Irish Lions, Mr Warren Gatland visited HBHS today as part of our Leadership Fortnight which will be profiled in future posts and publications. Mr Gatland spoke first to the Captains of Sporting Codes and members of the AS Physical Education class (pictured right) on what makes for an effective leader, how to manage challenging situations and have those dreaded difficult conversations, and on what it takes to keep the Lions "machine" (as he called it) working so well. He then shifted venue and audience and spoke to the school and the staff in the Hall at interval. (Article cont)
