HBHS Debating Complete Clean Sweep

15th Mar 2011, 2:59pm

In a clean sweep of all six debates, HBHS’ Thomas Simpson (Year 12), Chris Jury (Year 11) and Neeraj Khatri (Year 12) won the Waikato/BOP Russell McVeagh Debating Championships on 13 March. The development team of Iain Miller (Year 12), Greg Kampjes (Year 12) and Fraser Paine (Year 12) was in contention at the break for semi-finals, but was eliminated on total speech points.

Each team had thirty minutes to prepare three eight-minutes speeches and a four minute reply on such diverse topics as ‘The West should stop providing aid to anti-democratic regimes in the Middle East’ to ‘This House supports the abolition of the Maori seats’.

In the moot ‘That all major national sports fixtures should be televised free to air’, the No. 1 team defeated an opposing team of university student Debate Society members who were also adjudicators.

This is an extremely impressive feat for young men in their mid-teens.

HBHS Development Win David Hoskins 1st XI Cup

30th Oct 2012, 1:41pm

On Saturday the 27th October the HBHS Development cricket team travelled to Matamata College to play their 1st XI team in the first 50 over game of the season.

Matamata were the current holders of the David Hoskins Secondary 1st XI Cup.

HBHS bowled the hosts out for 138 runs in 43 overs with Renay Meadows taking 3 wickets for 19 runs with Cooper Rowell and Stephen Reddin taking 2 wickets each.

HBHS past their total when Chris Steegs hit 2 runs with 2 balls left in the match, and were delighted to claim the Hoskins trophy for the first time for the school.

The competition for this trophy was first played for in 2001 and it is the first time that HBHS have ever held the cup.

HBHS has played in many games over that period of time and have never before had their hands on the silver ware.

It was even more reason for excitement for this team, as there are 7 Year 10s playing, 3 Year 11s and have the two Year 13s, Stephen Reddin and Liam Verry. These two boys have led from the front.

HBHS Development XI carve their name on the Dave Hoskin Trophy

11th Mar 2013, 9:49am

For the first time since 2001, an HBHS cricket team has earned the right to have their name engraved on the Dave Hoskin Trophy, and it is the Development XI, with a final over victory against St Peter's 1st XI this past weekend, who have accomplished this feat.  Coach Mr Richard Dodunski reports on the team's triumph...

HBHS won the toss and decided to bowl, a decision that quickly paid off, with St Peters 30 for 1 after 7 overs.  St Peter's recent double centurion Tim Seifert soon got their innings back on track but was dismissed for 71.  The score kept ticking over with this shift in momentum, but the HBHS bowlers worked hard to finally bowl St Peter's out for 245 in the 50th over.  Captain Troy Mitchell led by example with the ball, taking a vital 5 wickets for 36 runs.  The HBHS run chase did not start smoothly, with opener Cooper Rowell caught for just 1 run.  (cont)

18th Feb 2013, 9:22am

HBHS Cricket Development XI coach Mr Richard Dodunski reports on the weekend’s success…

Batting first, the Matamata College 1st XI posted 277 from 49 overs, which was a very good total.  The outfield was fast, meaning that any shot hit with pace past a fielder was guaranteed to make the boundary rope.  Top scorer was Aidan O Nelly with 92, including 12 fours and a six.  Soumil Singh was the best bowler for HBHS with figures of 3 for 40, and Stephen Sistern-Tate and Ravindu Pathirana both took 2 wickets.  In reply, HBHS started slowly and were 1 down for 14 runs when Mattie Clark was caught behind.  (cont)
