HBHS Development XI wins Dave Hoskin trophy

HBHS Cricket Development XI coach Mr Richard Dodunski reports on the weekend’s success…

Batting first, the Matamata College 1st XI posted 277 from 49 overs, which was a very good total.  The outfield was fast, meaning that any shot hit with pace past a fielder was guaranteed to make the boundary rope.  Top scorer was Aidan O Nelly with 92, including 12 fours and a six.  Soumil Singh was the best bowler for HBHS with figures of 3 for 40, and Stephen Sistern-Tate and Ravindu Pathirana both took 2 wickets.  In reply, HBHS started slowly and were 1 down for 14 runs when Mattie Clark was caught behind.  However, Jake Gibson and Soumil Singh soon mounted a recovery, with Jake quickly getting his eye in and smashing boundaries to all parts of the ground.  Jake finished the match on 160 not out, and hit 25 fours and 2 sixes to give HBHS the win in the 38th over for the loss of 6 wickets, thus claiming the Hoskin trophy.  This was the second time this season that Matamata has had to hand the trophy over to the Development XI.  Other HBHS batsman of note were Rory Howell, Fergus MkKinnon and Soumil Singh.  The game was wonderful to watch and was played in good spirit by both teams.  These two sides have had some good battles over the last two seasons, and will no doubt continue to do so.
