HBHS Crews Perform Well at New Zealand Rowing Club Championships

27th Feb 2014, 3:54pm

The New Zealand Rowing Club Championships were held last week at Lake Karapiro from the 18th to the 22nd of February, and as part of their build-up to the Maadi Regatta, a number of HBHS crews competed and came away with a collection of ten medals. The Novice Four won a gold and silver medal, as did the Novice Quad in their events. The Novice Eight won gold by an enormous 26 second margin, and the Novice Double also came away with a gold medal. Two of HBHS's novice rowers, Jacob Prier and Rhys Bain won all four novice titles they competed in, a most impressive effort. The HBHS Maadi Crew (pictured, at right) performed very well, winning both the Club Eight with the ceremony at right, and the Under 19 Fours event. The other Under 19 Four came a very close second in the Club Four race, and the Under 17 Eight finished a close third in the Club 8. HBHS's final tally was 6 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medal. Worth noting, the Under 16 Eight and Four finished fourth in the Club 8 and Under 19 Four, contributing to a strong HBHS showing at this regatta. We congratulate them on their efforts and wish them every success.

HBHS Cycling Success

31st Mar 2011, 9:16am

Sam Dobbs (Year 10, left) and Sam Gaze (Year 11, right) have both won their age group competitions in the Central Hawkes Bay Tour, one of the first national rounds of the junior selection process for international racing in Camberra.  They respectively competed in the Under 17 (48 starters)  and Under 15 (24 starters) Boys' races.  Rain and fog made the first and second stage conditions very challenging, and a number of boys crashed during the time trials.  Sam Gaze was first overall,  in King of the Mountains and going in to the last stage.  Sam Dobbs won the prologue (time trial) by two seconds, was second  in the first road stage, and gained the Hill Climb jersey.  The next major race the boys are involved in will be held in Rotorua in two weeks.

Selections for the New Zealand team will be made in July, and Gaze is hopeful that he will make the cut.  His goals for 2012 include the Mountain Bike and Junior World Road Cycling championships in Spain.  He also aspires to compete in the Canada Tour, where Year 13 Scott Crieghton achieved such a pleasing result last year.  Sam Gaze wanted to make a point of thanking his father for taking him to the competition, and Andrew Barlow - the owner of Place Makers Racing Team.   Sam Dobbs would like to extend his thanks to his Mum for her support, and to his coach.
