HBHS is pleased to report that Kent (Yr 12) and Ash Russell (Yr 9) both won first places at the Waikato Bay of Plenty Brass Band Competition, held this past weekend. Playing cornet, Kent won the Under 19 Variation, scoring 84/100. Ash won the Junior Percussion section for the second year running, playing two pieces to score 85/100.

The boys have had a good year, musically.  Kent has moved up from Hamilton Auxiliary Brass to join Ash in Hamilton City Brass. At the New Zealand Concert Band Association Festival at Hastings in August, Kent was in a Gold award winning trumpet trio. Kent is currently one of two HBHS students in the National Secondary Schools Brass Band.

On the 20th of May, five Hamilton Boys’ High School students competed at the North Island Secondary School Motocross Championship. The event was hosted by the Taranaki Motorcycle Club, and held at their picturesque New Plymouth track.

The Hamilton Boys’ High School riders had a great day of close racing, and after the final scores were tallied had won the event. This was a wonderful conclusion to the day, and made all the hard work worthwhile.

The overall results were calculated from the top three riders from each school. Therefore, the event was fair for all schools, regardless of size.

HBHS NZ Representative Water Ski Racing

21st May 2012, 7:45am

Year 9 student Ethan Wilson and Year 10 student Hayden Gunn competed in their first international water ski racing event, representing New Zealand in the 2012 Trans-Tasman Ski Challenge between NZ and Victoria, Australia.

The New Zealand team, led by Hamilton Boys' High Old Boy Brad Dutton, won this year’s challenge in one of the closest challenges in the 23 year history of the event.   The challenge is a great stepping stone for juniors and provides international competition for the boys skiing at speeds up to 80 miles per hour.

This year Ethan skied in the under 13 age group and Hayden in the under 19 age group.  This was definitely a fantastic opportunity to test their skills against some very tough opposition. Both boys have their sights set on selection for the NZ team next April where they will travel to Victoria in hope of retaining the cup. Also very much in their sites is the World Ski Racing Championships being held in America in September 2013.

Both have just completed a very successful 2011/2012 season. Ethan recently winning the North Island Champs for sub junior boys and Hayden placed 2nd at the North Island champs for the F5 class (boat motor 200hp) and 2nd in Under 16 Boys for the North Island Series. Both Ethan and Hayden are in training for  the next ski season which begins in August and runs through to April 2013. Races are held at Karapiro, Taupo, Rotorua, Birkenhead, Lake Rotoma and as far away as Wellington.

HBHS NZ Rugby Reps Perform Well

11th Oct 2010, 2:01pm

1st XV Captain, Nick Ross (lock), Fraser Armstrong (tight head prop), and Adam Burn (No 8) took the field with the New Zealand Secondary Schools team in Dunedin against Australia last Wednesday. All three players started, and played what was a very tight game between two really talented teams. The final result was 30-21 to New Zealand. To the seasoned observer, the boys all looked as though they had particularly good games. Playing well at this level shows that they are competitive for higher honours in the future. They can now each realistically hope for a place on the Under 20 New Zealand side for the World Cup in 2011. We wish Nick, Fraser and Adam well in their endeavours.

HBHS Old Boy 2012 NZ Dairy Trainee of the Year

21st May 2012, 8:06am

The 2012 New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the Year, HBHS Old Boy Nathan Christian, aged 22, is an outstanding young man who is focused and determined to achieve dairy farm ownership, says head judge Don Seath.

Mr Christian has a Bachelor of Commerce in Agriculture from Lincoln University and has competed in the Coast to Coast multisport event. He has a goal of farm ownership by 2020.

“I would have a high level of confidence in the fact that he will achieve the goals he has set himself in the future. He is a very mature balanced person who works hard and manages to achieve activities off the farm as well,” Mr Seath says.

“The trainee competition is gaining traction and I believe the trainees coming into the competition are better prepared than in the past – certainly they are receiving some good schooling from their supporters and advisors.”
