HBHS Musicians Continue to Excel

HBHS is pleased to report that Kent (Yr 12) and Ash Russell (Yr 9) both won first places at the Waikato Bay of Plenty Brass Band Competition, held this past weekend. Playing cornet, Kent won the Under 19 Variation, scoring 84/100. Ash won the Junior Percussion section for the second year running, playing two pieces to score 85/100.

The boys have had a good year, musically.  Kent has moved up from Hamilton Auxiliary Brass to join Ash in Hamilton City Brass. At the New Zealand Concert Band Association Festival at Hastings in August, Kent was in a Gold award winning trumpet trio. Kent is currently one of two HBHS students in the National Secondary Schools Brass Band.

At the Te Awamutu Competitions Society contest in September Ash won the Percussion Trophy, and Kent got two 1st places, a Highly Commended, and a Scholarship for his Trumpet playing. Ash also received a certificate for Most Improved Junior Musician at HBHS awards on Tuesday night. We congratulate both boys on their achievements, and look forward to seeing their musicianship flourish.
