Browning Receives 2nd National BMX Title
Year 12 BMX racer Jarrod Browning came first in the 16 year-old boys’ class at Nationals this year. The competition was held over Easter weekend in Rotorua and fine weather spurred the contestants on to excellent race times.
Jarrod won each of the five races he was entered in on Sunday, and was ‘super happy’ with that. He particularly enjoyed the final, which he treated like his last race on the BMX circuit. The push that this idea gave him lead to a superb finishing time and a second National Number 1 title.

HBHS boys have been mobilised to serve the community in a number of ways this year. Over the course of the next ten weeks, Ms. Basel's ENP class will be taking part in Habitat for Humanity's Brush with Kindness program, whereby they will be helping with gardens, doing maintenance work and learning more about the project. It will be a hugely beneficial experience to them in both developing their personals skills and to their NCEA progam.
16 students have been selected to attempt the new NCEA Literacy Standards. The standards consist of collecting evidence in a portfolio of your literacy achievements in speaking and communicating, reading and writing. The boys are currently collecting evidence for writing - why are they working with Habitat for Humanity you may be asking then?

Celebrating Leadership Week
HBHS participated in the setting of a new world record on 21st June. As part of the Sir Peter Blake Trust Leadership Week (1-8 July), the Trust, supported by Westpac, sent 90 metres of clothes-line to HBHS, and 16 other locations around New Zealand. To raise awareness about Leadership Week, the boys each pegged a red sock on the line. This will be sent to Westpac Stadium on 24 June, and connected to fill the field with thousands of red socks fluttering in the wind. The world record for the most socks pegged to one clothes-line will be set once the lines are attached.
Our Year 13s were acknowledged for their ongoing leadership role at HBHS in an assembly prior to the event. We continue to benefit from their willingness to lead by example, and to show newer members of the school community what our culture of care means.
