BMX Racers win North Island Competition

17th Nov 2011, 12:29pm

Year 11 Jarrod Browning and Year 10 Joshua Jordan have both taken out impressive placings in the recently held North Island BMX competitions.  Browning initially struggled to assert his presence on the national scene - he crashed during the finals, and has come back from a debilitating arm injury.  His recovery appears to be complete, however, as he not only won the North Island competition, but beat Australia's fastest age-group racer in the process.

Browning's short term goal is to become the New Zealand Number 1 again; he will get a chance to compete for this title next Easter, in Rotorua.

Jordan's performance (third in the North Island) was achieved after months of training.  The courses require racers to 'sprint' for up to 50 seconds, with little regard for personal safety.  Both young men find the last strait the most challenging part of the race, as it requires reserves of fitness that rely on consistent training and discipline.

Books for Fiji

23rd Sep 2009, 1:29pm

On Tuesday 22 September, another very successful "Books for Fiji" mufti day was held at school, cementing this event as an annual fixture in the school's calendar. Organised by the International Students department, HBHS pupils were invited to donate two suitable books each, in lieu of paying the $2 mufti day fee.

Students from all levels in the school streamed into the Hall during morning registration to deliver their books, and within minutes, the tables were groaning under the weight of hundreds of new and well loved texts. The books ranged from reference books, academic books and the latest novels, to delightful hard-backed children's books. All of these are guaranteed to bring a great deal of pleasure to many students in both primary and secondary schools in Fiji.

Books For Fiji

21st Oct 2010, 11:03am

What do Hairy Maclary and Advanced Computer Programming texts have in common? Both of them are welcomed with open arms by Fijian teaching staff and students in cash-strapped schools. For the fourth year in a row, HBHS has worked in tandem with the Fairfield Rotary Club to collect as many books as possible to send to primary and secondary schools, hospitals and a prison in Fiji.

Mrs Thornton (Dean of International Students) said that it was heartbreaking to visit Fijian schools and see highly motivated students limited by poor resourcing. In one instance, she spoke to a student who said that he and his classmates have a scheduled library visit in which they sit in the library – there are no books to borrow.  There are rarely class sets of English texts for students to study, and the high cost of importing texts can make the purchase of new material little more than a pipe dream.
