Defence Forces Day
On Friday 18th June 18, 2012 the Defence Forces held a leadership day at Hamilton Boys’ High School. The objective was to provide information to students who display an interest in Defence careers, to enhance their leadership / team building ability, to improve self confidence and to gain an insight into military training.
Nineteen young men attended and were put through their paces by WO2 Henry Wichman (Army), and Sgt Nick Jones (Air Force).
“The enthusiasm and effort that was put in by all attendees was pleasing to see. Some of the thinking that went into the leadership activities, and involving all members of the team, right down to the huge effort during the PT session.
Well done to Hamilton Boys’ for showing us potential future leaders”
Sgt Nick Jones

Denzel Ieremia wins Cambridge Golf Classic
HBHS Captain of Golf, Denzel Ieremia, (pictured at right, second from left with his HBHS Golf team mates) has won the Cambridge Open Golf Classic this past weekend, shooting an extraordinary final total of 16 under. Denzel won by 6 shots and was competing in the open men's competition, so he will be hoping to maintain this impressive form heading into the secondary school national tournament to be held in Christchurch on 2 September 2013. Check out the link below to see coverage in the Waikato Times, and we encourage HBHS students to support the Hole in One Competition this week in order to help raise funds to get the team to Christchurch. Congratulations to Denzel on his latest victory.

Each year Colin Leach, the head of the Drama department at Hamilton Boys’ High organizes a trip to see an outstanding play held at The Auckland University Theatre. And with each year the productions have only gotten better. On the 1st March Mr. Leach and 50 Boys’ High students from the year groups 11,12 and 13 took a bus to Auckland to go and see The Motor Camp, a production written by David Armstrong. The students joined groups from other schools as well, and it is fair to say The Motor Camp was a hit. Throughout the whole performance the audience was in stitches. And after the show the laughter carried on outside where students reenacted their favorite parts. As a small treat to the dedicated boys, Mr. Leach planned a lunch stop in at Mercer on the way home.
Overall the day was an extremely fun and educational one. The students were able to watch a professional stage performance, and see where their love of the theatre could lead them, and even a thought of where they too could perform in front of and entertain young thespians like themselves.

On Sunday, the Hamilton Boys’ High School first team qualified to represent the Waikato region in the national secondary school chess tournament to be held in Palmerston North in September.
The team had four players in rank order: Segar Manoharan, Ari Angelo, Christopher Symon and Daniel Ng. There was a titanic struggle with Saint Paul’s Collegiate’s first team for the coveted right to represent the province. They went into the final round of the tournament with scores tied on 7 ½ points each. Both teams had one player draw a game with Hamilton Boys’ High School’s second team. Alister Teow, a Year 9 student in the school’s second team, struck a psychological blow for Hamilton Boys’ High School when he drew his game against the top ranked player in the Saint Paul’s Collegiate first team.
The final round, played between the two first teams, ended in a 2 all draw with Segar and Daniel winning their games for Hamilton Boys’ High School. This left both teams on 9 ½ points and needing to play a further round to decide which team would represent the region. Hamilton Boys’ High School’s team rose to the occasion superbly and secured a 4 nil victory in the play off.
Congratulations to the team on their success.

The teacher-in-charge of our Duke of Edinburgh students, Mrs Bastion, commented on the progress of her charges, as the end of the third term draws near…
Normally at this time of year, there is a mad rush to get all of the students through. All of the last tramps, the last consultations, the last activities that make the end of the year go more smoothly. Mr Bennett and I both worry towards the end of the year that we may not have everyone organised, but inevitably all of the books come in and it turns out that a lot has been achieved.
The books catalogue the four aspects of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme that the boys need to complete. They carry around the book and get their football coach or music teacher or pastor or volunteer co-ordinator to sign, to prove that they’ve been active in their community. It is neat to go to community fundraisers like the Red Cross Book Fair and see Duke of Edinburgh boys there helping out.
