Dramatic Chess Win for HBHS
On Sunday, the Hamilton Boys’ High School first team qualified to represent the Waikato region in the national secondary school chess tournament to be held in Palmerston North in September.
The team had four players in rank order: Segar Manoharan, Ari Angelo, Christopher Symon and Daniel Ng. There was a titanic struggle with Saint Paul’s Collegiate’s first team for the coveted right to represent the province. They went into the final round of the tournament with scores tied on 7 ½ points each. Both teams had one player draw a game with Hamilton Boys’ High School’s second team. Alister Teow, a Year 9 student in the school’s second team, struck a psychological blow for Hamilton Boys’ High School when he drew his game against the top ranked player in the Saint Paul’s Collegiate first team.
The final round, played between the two first teams, ended in a 2 all draw with Segar and Daniel winning their games for Hamilton Boys’ High School. This left both teams on 9 ½ points and needing to play a further round to decide which team would represent the region. Hamilton Boys’ High School’s team rose to the occasion superbly and secured a 4 nil victory in the play off.
Congratulations to the team on their success.
