2014 HBHS Golf Championships

17th Feb 2014, 10:50am

On Thursday 13 February, the HBHS golf team took to the St Andrew's Golf Course in order to compete for a place in this year's Super 8 team. Teacher in Charge of Golf, Mr Brendon Cooley, reports on the tournament...

It was certainly an important day for the golfers, as there are only 8 spots available in the Super 8 team. The junior boys were competing to see who would take out the Junior Cup in 2014, and it was the first stage in the Senior Cup competition, which will be decided on performances over the year to encourage consistency.

2014 Swimming Sports and Haka Competition Results

18th Feb 2014, 3:24pm

On a day that was unusually rain-free for the HBHS Swimming Sports Competition, the 2014 Champions, along with the winners of the Haka Competition have been found.  Whilst the Haka Competition was the closest it has been in years, with 6 points the difference between first and last place, the House Swimming Sports Competition was anything but, with Taylor House winning by a considerable margin.  Argyle House (pictured, right) took out the Haka Competition with a polished and very well-rehearsed effort, with Taylor a very close second.  In the Inter-House relay this result was reversed, with Taylor the winners from Argyle, and in the all-important Staff Inter-faculty relay it was a combined English and Social Sciences team that took the win.  The Junior, Intermediate and Senior Swim Champions are as follows, along with the Haka and House Competition final results.  Check out the Term 1 High Achiever for a full report on today's events, and a special thank you to Mr Hemi Coates and the Physical Education Department for organising a superb day.  (Article cont)

24 Hour Musicathon

8th May 2012, 7:47am

Heroic amounts of coffee, good humour and superb talent buoyed along the student, staff and Old Boy performers during our recent 24 hour Musicathon.  The Music Suite was opened for 24 hours from 1 pm on Friday afternoon, with individual and group acts performing throughout the wee hours of the morning.  Members of the public were encouraged to attend, with acts ranging from rock, jazz, beat poetry, classical solos and experimental music to entertain and delight.

The Musicathon is a key fundraising opportunity for music students travelling to Rarotonga on the 29th of June.  The boys will perform in a range of venues, including one of the premiere hotels on the island.  The Gypsy Pickers, HBHS 'Big Jazz Express', and special guests including the Messant Trio, The Ukes of Haphazard and many others provided tired but cheerful audience members with a night to remember.  Special thanks go to Mr Botting and Mr Rickards for making this event such a success.

3rd Division Rugby Nail Biting Final

23rd Aug 2012, 8:07am

The Division 3 Rugby Final Marty Holah Cup was won by HBHS 4th XV vs Melville High School 1st XV, in a drama-filled game, with a fairy tale finish.

Hamilton BHS won 24-23, 14-10 to HBHS at halftime.  Melville High School have been undefeated all season going into the final.  HBHS 4th XV lost one game to Melville in the round robin, 24-17. Both teams won their semi-finals last weekend.  The game was played at Melville High School, as Melville were the top qualifiers.

Game progress: Melville scored first with a short-side run away try from the halfway down the touchline. This remained unconverted. The score was 5-0 Melville.  HBHS scored a try by Jaden Wallace (hooker), charging over from a ruck 5m out from the line, which was converted by 1st 5 Daley Rata-Makene, making the score 7-5 to HBHS.

Melville scored another unconverted try to take a 10-7 lead mid-way through the first half. At this point, Rome Nonoa (wing) scores in the corner, following a backline movement, converted by Daley Rata-Makene, to take a 14-10 lead into halftime.  Melville scored a converted try by their prop to take a 17-14 lead. This was followed soon after by a drop goal by the Melville 1st 5, to take Melville out to a 20-14 lead.
