Netsafe advice to schools & parents regarding Christchurch attacks

Dear Parents & Caregivers

The following important message relating to the Christchurch attacks has been sent to us by the Ministry of Education. We ask that you please read the message and follow the advice provided by Netsafe and the Ministry. The school is supporting students in accordance with this advice.

"Netsafe has received a number of reports of online content relating to the attacks in Christchurch.

Footage of the attacks has been deemed objectionable under New Zealand law which means that possessing or distributing the footage is an offence.

Anyone who finds footage of the attacks online should report it to Netsafe at netsafe.org.nz/report but they should not keep copies or share it.

The footage of the Christchurch attacks is disturbing and will be harmful for people to see. If students have viewed the video and are struggling with what they have seen it’s likely they will require additional support. Agencies which can provide free support include YouthlineNeed to Talk and Kidsline.

While the content is online there is some risk that children or young people may come across it. Netsafe encourages schools and parents to proactively discuss with young people what they should do if they come across distressing content online. Further information is available at netsafe.org.nz/upsetting-content

If parents or schools have questions relating to this incident or other distressing online content they can contact Netsafe for free and confidential advice at netsafe.org.nz or call 0508 NETSAFE."

Boot Drop Off

18 March – 22 March

Boot Sale

25 March – 29 March

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

The Sports Committee are running the annual “HBHS Boot Drop” for 2019.

We are looking for donations of your used pairs of football and rugby boots that might be too small, out of fashion or gathering dust on your shelves. They will then be made available to students, some of whom may not be in a position to purchase new boots.

All proceeds will be donated to the “Headmasters Fund” for boys in need of assistance.

Boot Drop Off Wednesday 18 March – Friday 22 March

If you would like to donate your used pairs of boots, the sports committee will be set up outside the Sports Pavilion from next Monday through to next Friday from 8:30 – 9:00am.

Boot Display + Sale (Gold Coin Donation) Monday 25 March – Friday 29 March

We will have all the boots displayed out every lunchtime during Week 9 where they will all be available to purchase for a “gold coin”, or exchange your own pair for another.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to help others, who may be less fortunate than you.

Kind Regards
HBHS Sports Committee

Dear Parents/Caregivers

The Hamilton East Lions Club is offering a $2500 scholarship for a youth development opportunity such as a 10 Day voyage on the Spirit of New Zealand.

This full scholarship is for a student who would value such a life-changing experience and find it a significant boost for their self-esteem. Please do not apply if you could save up part of the cost. It is specifically for someone who, for financial reasons, would never be able to afford to go.

To take advantage of this wonderful opportunity, we must have applications emailed to jtizard@hbhs.school.nz by 12.30pm on Friday 15th March.

Students need to be between 16 and 18 Years when they go on the trip. They need to be able to make their own way to and from Auckland for the trip. A suitable sailing date would be selected after the award is approved.

Please note, the award could be given for a different experience e.g. Outward Bound.

Kind regards

Jeremy Tizard

Dear Parents/Caregivers

We are having a small issue with some students about our procedures when they are not feeling well.

Students need to go to the Wellness Centre and be assessed by our nursing staff.  Home will be contacted if they need to be collected due to their ill health.

We are finding that a number of students are texting their parents to come and collect them from school.  We would appreciate your support in letting your sons’ know the correct procedure please, especially for health and safety reasons.

Kind regards
Greg Kirkham
Deputy Headmaster

Dear Parents/Caregivers

For boys busing to Porritt Stadium on Wednesday, 27 February.

The Number 14 Service runs along Crosby Road with pick ups and drop offs from both sides of the road very close to Porritt Stadium.

Boys wishing to catch this bus, who do not live in this area will need to bus to the Transport Centre and change to the #14 bus.

The closest Orbiter stop to Crosby Road is outside St Pauls Collegiate, for both the clockwise and anti-clockwise service.  Boys would then need to walk to or from the Stadium to catch this bus.

If your son is wanting to catch an Orbiter from Hamilton Boys’ High School, he can do so opposite Countdown, NOT outside Hamilton Boys’ High School.  This will take him to the St Pauls Collegiate stop.

The school will also have a late bus leaving HBHS at 8.45am for Porritt Stadium. This bus will depart Porritt Stadium at 2.30pm sharp to return to HBHS.  The cost for this bus service is $2 each way.  This is to be paid to the Deputy Headmaster on duty at the bus.

After Athletics, boys wishing to go to Chartwell will need to catch the #14 bus on the same side of the road as the Stadium.  Boys wishing to go to the Transport Centre via Five Cross Roads, will need to catch the #14 bus on the opposite side of the road to the Stadium.  These buses run every 30 minutes.

For more information regarding bus routes, please go to http://www.busit.co.nz/hamilton-routes/
