Painting Selected for International Publication

10th Dec 2010, 7:52am

HBHS Art teacher Heather Bramwell has had a painting selected for publication in an international book of portraiture. The painting is part of an ongoing series exploring the human condition via anthropomorphism. Artists were encouraged to submit portraits in a range of media with open selection for an internet exhibition. Ms Bramwell was invited to enter, and made her submission along with 78 other artists from Europe, the US and closer to home. An international panel selected her painting to be displayed permanently on-line in a collection curated by Dale Copeland

‘Portrait of the Artist’ is being collated at the moment. This book will feature the twenty five winning images, as well as thumbnails of all of the entries.

Ms Bramwell did a four year diploma in Design, then a BMA with Honours at Wintec, prior to teacher training. She has worked extensively with adult learners as well as high school students. Her philosophy of Art is informed by her experiences as a teacher – she believes that everyone has the potential to develop skills in this field, and that all students should have access to a positive Art experience. A copy of ‘Portrait of the Artist’ will be added to the HBHS Art Library on publication.

Paul Clout, Surf Life Saver

8th Feb 2011, 7:08am

Paul Clout (Year 9) was a stand out athlete for the Bay team at the Regional U14s BOP Team Surf Life Saving Champs on Friday. The team did extremely well, achieving second place (silver medal) just 2.5 points behind Auckland. Paul was the starter in the sprint relay team, gaining them first place in his ‘leg’ with the BOP team, and coming in second out of seven regions in that event. In the beach individual sprints Paul had a blinder, but was pipped at the post, coming second, with the same result in the beach flags.

The final event for the day decides which region has the all-round fitness, strength and determination to name themselves as the kings and queens of the beach! This event includes all ten athletes of each region doing different events throughout the relay. Paul was given the task of running 400m at a 200m pace. Once again he didn’t let his team down; he pulled the team out to a great lead of 200m which we needed to compensate for other regions being stronger in different legs of the relay.   The BOP team came out on top and won the race comfortably. We congratulate Paul, and look forward to seeing his developing skill in this highly competitive sport.

Prasad Wins National Boxing Title

15th Nov 2011, 11:56am

HBHS Year 10 student Isaac Prasad is a New Zealand middleweight title holder.  Isaac travelled to Levin two weeks ago to compete in the National Boxing Championships.  He has been a boxer for three years, and trains with Dion McNabney's Elite Boxing Club in Callum Brae.  Isaac reflected on his recent achievements:

How often are you training at the moment?

We're coming into the off-season, so four days a week.  When I was training for Nationals, it would have been about six.

What's it like to get in the ring, knowing that your opponent is allowed to bash you in the face?

It's completely different to sparring, or any of the other preparations.  You need a very, very high level of fitness.  I'm quite heavy for my age and height, so the people I'm fighting are often 17 or 18 and quite a bit bigger-looking than me.  Sometimes my opponent is much more intimidating than me.  I don't really mind - I just zone it out and box.  Do what I've learnt.

Boxing is an unusual sport in that it's possible to get to the end without anyone apart from the judges knowing what the score is.  How do you cope with that?
