What are the Scholarship Examinations?

‘Scholarship’ is a monetary award to recognise top students. The Scholarship exams enable students to be assessed against challenging standards, and are demanding for the most able students in each subject. Scholarship students are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstraction and generalization, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding and ideas to complex situations.

The Premier Awards: The top five to ten candidates in the country (minimum achievement at least three Outstanding Scholarships) receive $10,000 a year for up to three years of tertiary study, so long as the student then maintains a ‘B’ average.

Outstanding Scholar Awards are given to the next 40 – 60 top candidates. The minimum eligibility requirement to be considered for this award is three Scholarships with at least two at "Outstanding" level or more than three Scholarships with at least one at "Outstanding". The number of recipients for this award is restricted and achieving the minimum requirement will not guarantee an award. These students receive $5,000 each year for three years as long as candidates maintain a 'B' grade average in tertiary study.

The Scholarship Award is for candidates who get Scholarship in three or more subjects. They receive $2,000 each year for up to three years as long as candidates maintain a 'B' grade average in tertiary study. Single Subject Awards are for candidates who get Scholarship in one or two subjects. They receive a 'one-off' award of $500 per subject (maximum payment $1000).

Students who excel in Scholarship examinations often find that they are eligible for other tertiary awards. As you can see, there is a strong financial incentive for HBHS students to prepare for these prestigious examinations. We wish all of our academic scholars well in their studies for 2011.
