Nick Gill + All Blacks visit HBHS

26th Jun 2012, 11:12am

All Black strength and conditioning trainer Nick Gill spoke to all 1st and 2nd code representative players during a lunchtime session in the school hall on Wednesday 20 June.  The All Blacks themselves conducted a closed training session at HBHS Gym on Thursday, from 9.00 to noon.

His main message what about how, as athletes, the boys can get the best out of their performance.  He discussed the ways that the intake of food relates to performance, the fact that sleep patterns have a significant bearing on wellbeing (recommending between 8 – 10 hours of sleep a night), and that eating every two to three hours a day supports recovery and physical output.

He also talked about using technology to help with training – in particular MyNetDiary, which allows you to calculate the number of kilojoules you should be consuming for peak performance in your particular sport, given your body weight and training frequency.  It can also scan barcodes for nutritional content; a number of the 1st XV rugby players are already beginning to experiment with this programme.

Nick Vincent, Library Manager

28th Mar 2012, 2:05pm

Hamilton Boys’ High School appointed a new library manager at the beginning of 2012.  Mr Nick Vincent commented on his experiences to date:

I understand you’ve worked in outside the school system...

I’ve worked in public libraries; that’s where I have got my training.  My experiences have been in public libraries.  I started working in Auckland, then moved on to Hamilton, and then took a position at Matamata as the library manager there.

What are the specific strengths that you bring to this position?

I have research skills – I’m keen to support staff and students who use databases and the books in the library to find information. I’m very strong on collection management and getting the right books for the audience.

What would you say characterises a teen male reader?

The teen male reader often tends to enjoy adventure fiction, action, World War II books, vehicles, outdoors and non-fiction adventure.

How do you select new books?

We get new books pretty much all of the year around.  Myself and Toni [Koning, teacher librarian] will go to Whitcoulls and PaperPlus to cater for the audience and pick up new releases that would fit the profile of our readers.
