Winter Tournament Week - The Golf Report
Teacher in charge of Golf, Mr Brendon Cooley, has been away in Christchurch with the HBHS team this week, and filed the following report:
WHILE THE BIG GUNS ARE AWAY THE JUNIORS COME TO PLAY!
The top golf side travelled down to Christchurch to compete in the National Secondary Final and under-performed. We finished 7th in New Zealand but all the golfers were disappointed in their individual performance. The highlight was Ben Murray, our 4th ranked golfer, shooting the best score of round one with a 77. The boys are currently playing the Under 19 age group championship with Denzel Ieremia 11th and Bayley Waudby 18th with one round to go. All four players made the cut which was very encouraging, but with three of our top players being Year 13, we will be looking for the juniors to step up next year and take their places. The juniors made a great start to maintaining our strong run of form in golf by winning the Lunden Links trophy over the last three days by an impressive 10 shots. James Fellows-Ford (Year 9) was the standout of the tournament with net scores of 67, 68 and 70 on different courses. Pictured at right are the winning team, with James on the left, Matt Davis (Year 10), Sam Brinkworth (Year 9) and Maxwell Palmer (Year 12).
A summer league golf programme will run for 6 weeks in Term 4 for any Year 9 or 10 boy interested in playing golf. It will include coaching, driving range and a summer league tournament against other Waikato schools.
