Third National Touch Competition Win

For the third year in a row, HBHS has won the National Secondary Schools Touch Competition in Palmerston North. The Waikato was particularly well represented during this tournament: Hamilton Girls’ High School made it into the top four of their competition, and the mixed group was won by St Peter’s School in Cambridge.

HBHS were top of their pool on Day One; they then played the other top eight teams, which were split into two groups. Conditions were challenging during the first two days, with rain and blustery wind, but the final was played yesterday in beautiful weather.
The boys played four games on Saturday, against Christchurch Boys’ High, St Kentigens, Kelston and Paparoa. The top four teams then crossed over; the top team in each pool played the second team in the others. The semifinal was against St Peter’s (Auckland) was won 8 - 2. We then played  the final against St Kentigen’s, beating them in a re-run of the pool play, with a score of 5 – 3.

The boys played consistently well, with three HBHS players named in the tournament squad: Liston Togia, Henare Hira Herangi and Joseph Webber. Webber was named MVP of the tournament. Both he and Liston Togia struggled with injury throughout the tournament. We are grateful for the support provided by HGHS’ physio to keep them on the field.
