The Waterpolo Report

The Waikato Waterpolo Senior Secondary Schools competition came to an exciting end. In Division A the Senior A team faced Cambridge High School in the finals and unfortunately lost, ending a four year reign as Waikato Waterpolo Champions. The Junior A team came third overall, an amazing achievement in a Senior Competition.

Two of the players, Baxter Gordon and Sam Shepherd, received Outstanding Player of the Championship awards.

In Waikato Division B waterpolo the Senior B team came in third overall, the Senior Black team finished fourth and the Junior B team finished sixth overall in a pool of eight schools.

During the April holidays, the Senior A team competed in the NZSS Division 2 competition held at Waterworld, Te Rapa. The results were as follows:

St Peters College 8-8 (draw)

Rosmini College 4-10 (win)

Northcote College 8-10 (win)

John Paul College 11-8 (loss)

St Pat’s Stream 2-7 (win)

St John’s College 1-17 (win)

In Pool games – won 4, lost 1, drew 1

In the semi-finals against Cambridge High School (the current Waikato Waterpolo Champions) HBHS won 6-5 which was a very satisfying turnaround after the Waikato Competition!

Unfortunately, the team lost in the finals against John Paul College 6-5, letting in the final goal in the last 51 seconds of the match. Richard Sneddon, the HBHS Captain of Waterpolo, received an Outstanding Player of the tournament award.
