The Return of the Spelling Bee
Yes, the National Spelling Bee Competition is back at secondary school level, and Year 9 and 10 students are eligible to enter. HBHS has an illustrious history in this event, with Old Boys Thomas North (in 2008) and Harvard-bound Christopher Jury (in 2009) as former New Zealand Champions who went on to compete in the International Spelling Bee finals held in Washington DC. Listen out in assemblies, read the Daily Notices for entry details, or see the Director of Advanced Learning Programmes, Mr Graeme Miller, for more information. If you would like to test yourself against our former winners and see if you have the right spelling stuff, get someone to read the following list, taken from previous competitions. Absolutely no peeking!
Buddhism | hallucinogen | fusillade |
grotesqueness | mellifluous | obfuscatory |
loquacious | blasphemously | Anglophilia |
buccaneer |
