Te Maurea Whiritoi make history

On Saturday 19 March, Te Maurea Whiritoi (the Hamilton Boys’ and Girls’ High School kapa haka group) performed at the 121st Tūrangawaewae Regatta. It is a fun and family-friendly event where people race kōpapa on the river and the waka tauā salute dignitaries in attendance. Entertainment, stalls and carnival rides added to the festive atmosphere that celebrated Māori identity and river culture.

The Māori and Tongan monarchy were in attendance and witnessed the group make history by having the largest number of HBHS and HGHS students perform kapa haka in a public forum. A staggering 110 students filled the stage to produce a powerful performance that entertained. Many positive comments came from the audience and those that performed did themselves, their families, their ancestors and Waikato proud.
