Surf Lifesaving Update: Silver and Seventh
Oceans ’11 is the catchy name of the recent U14 National Surf Life Saving Championship. It was held this year from 24th – 27th February at the main beach of Mt Maunganui. 196 U14 year old boys competed in 4-7 heats per event with semifinals and finals on the last day. HBHS Year 9 Paul Clout competed in the U14 Board Race, the Board Rescue, Beach Sprints and Flags.
Paul had his work cut out for him in the Beach Flags with some amazing athletes to compete against. He achieved a top ten placing, coming in seventh overall, and then pulled out all of the stops during the Beach Sprints.
All of the boys got a great start during the final, and were neck and neck until the fifty-five metre mark. Paul dug deep at this point and managed to move out in front with the competitor from Midway. The race came down to the wire with only parts of a second between Midway’s first for gold, and Paul (Hot Water Beach) in second place for the silver medal.
