Super Start to 2017

We may have just finished our first official week back, but our HBHS staff and students have already begun to fill up the trophy cabinet and add to our list of titles and representatives.  As earlier reported, the first Super 8 title of the year has been won by our 1st XI cricket team in a nail-biter against perennial finalists Palmerston North Boys' High School.  This is the fifth year in a row that the trophy has been secured by HBHS and we look forward to finding it some Super 8 companions this year.  Our first National title winner for 2017 has already been found, with Year 11 student Caleb Cutmore winning an Under 16 Boys Surfing title.  Captain of Swimming Andrew Jeffcoat (pictured) has also secured a title, finishing in 1st place in the Swimming New Zealand Epic Open Water 5km swim in the 15 - 17 year old males category and in second place overall.  He also competed on the same day in the Epic and New Zealand Secondary Schools 2.5km swim, finishing second in the 17 - 17 year old males category and in third place overall.    We will feature a more detailed report on this event in the first High Achiever newsletter for the year.  Our rowing squad recently competed in the North Island Club Championships against adult rowers and came away with four gold medals and three bronze medals.  In other rowing news, our Director of Rowing, Mr Glenn Ross was recently named as Community Coach of the Year at the Waikato Sports Awards, and World champion cyclist Jared Gray was named as the Waikato Secondary Schools Sportsman of the Year.  Finally, we congratulate Year 13 student Timothy Neild on being selected for the New Zealand Junior Black Sticks Hockey team which is currently competing against Japan.  Well done to all of these HBHS family members on making such a fine start to 2017.
