Super 8 Tennis Win

The Hamilton Boys High senior tennis team travelled to New Plymouth to compete in the Super 8 Tennis competition held last Friday to Sunday. The team started strongly, winning their Section play with a 6-0 win over Hastings Boys High School, 5-1 win over Napier Boys High School and a 6-0 win over hosts New Plymouth Boys’ High School.

Saturday afternoon Hamilton Boys’ had to play Palmerston North Boys’ High School for a place in Sunday’s final. The team took a 3-1 lead after the singles matches and had to win one doubles match to secure the tie. In the top doubles Arapeta Collier-Waiomo and Adam Gage-Brown lost their doubles tie 7-5, 6-2 while the win was achieved by the strong doubles combination of Jake McCartney and Taylor McGuire. The boys faced a match point in the second set, which would of seen Hamilton missing out on a finals berth, but went on to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. The final result was 4-2 and saw the team progress to the final against a very strong Tauranga Boys’ High team.

On Sunday, under lovely blue skies, the finals were played. The team had a positive start with Taylor McGuire putting in a dominant and classy performance to win 6-1, 6-0. Matthew Sheedy showed a lot of focus and determination to win his match 6-2, 6-4. Jake McCartney had to pull out all stops to come back from 6-3 to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-3. An injured Adam Gage-Brown lost his singles tie 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, but this was enough to give the team an unbeatable lead and (for the second year in a row) the Super 8 Tennis title.
