Prefects 3, Staff 0. Soccer was the winner on the day.
A brief, welcome diversion from final internal assessments and exam preparation occurred at HBHS during Friday lunchtime; The Staff versus Prefects soccer match. An intense battle of wits and athleticism played out on the front field, with all the drama and entertainment spectators have been looking forward to since early September. Bad weather (and the absence of some of the strongest staff players) meant the game was postponed twice. It looked at one stage as if the contest would not go ahead at all. Therefore, we were all pleased when the organisers seized the opportunity on Friday to let this clash of the titans unfold.
Mr Stuart Hakeney, staff team coach, may be regretting his insistence that the performance of his players would prove the wisdom of his controversial rotation policy. Ten players took the field for the staff in the first five minutes of the game, allowing for little substitution. Mr Hakeney compensated for this by playing twelve (the prefects didn’t notice) in the second half, including the redoubtable Ms. Gemma Cheyne. The staff worked hard to make up for lost ground in the first quarter, but it became apparent that even the spritely defence of Mr Aughton and Mr Muggeridge would not be enough to carry the game. The prefects romped home with a victory that owed much to high spirits and a noticeable lack of arthritis.
Both teams wish to express their thanks to Mr Andrew Tucker, for his even-handed refereeing of such a high-stakes competition. We look forward to the rematch next year. Meanwhile, study continues…
