New HBHS Business Hall of Fame Inductees
A formal assembly was held at HBHS yesterday to recognise the achievements of Mr Donald T Riley, Mr Frederick P Jones, Mr (Carrick) John Clough and Mr David Braithwaite OBE, JP, FACA. Each man is an HBHS Old Boy who has attained pre-eminence in his field of business endeavour. The school was delighted to host Mr Riley in person, and to have the opportunity to hear him speak about his career highlights, and advice for aspiring scholars and entrepreneurs in the audience.
The Hamilton Boys’ High School Business Hall of Fame was established in March 2008. The school celebrated the outstanding business success of three former students, each of whom had made a significant contribution to the New Zealand economy.
In establishing a Business Hall of Fame, Hamilton Boys’ High School was one of eight pilot schools nationally who, in association with Enterprise New Zealand Trust and the Department of Trade and Enterprise, aimed to celebrate the business success of past students with the school community. By regularly exposing students to successful ‘locally grown’ role models, the project aims to raise student awareness of the role of business in New Zealand. The three inaugural laureates will soon be joined by an additional two laureates this year and each year hereafter.
The school now welcomes nominations of former students from interested parties. The nomination form is linked to this website, or you can collect a hard copy from the School office, or e-mail Denise Weren, Project Co-ordinator at dweren@hbhs.school.nz.
Our inaugural Business Hall of Fame laureates were Wendell C Phillips, Ray Richards and Bill Foreman who, as students in the thirties and forties, moved on from Hamilton High School to pursue very different careers. The common thread linking these men was that each of them reached significant heights in their chosen fields.
