Nau Mai Haere Mai to the Class of 2016

Today nearly 500 new students and staff, along with their families, were welcomed on to HBHS to begin the 2016 school year in our formal powhiri ceremony.  This is a very special opportunity to show respect to all of our newest HBHS family members and to wish them all the very best as they begin their journey here with us.  Whaea Miriama Barton began the ceremony with the karanga and party were welcomed by Matua Mita Graham who spoke for the staff and Year 13 students who were waiting to greet the Year 9's with the school haka.  Matua Toti West spoke for the new staff and students and the powhiri was concluded by Headmaster Mrs Susan Hassall who spoke of the rights and responsibilities of all students at HBHS, both to excel and to enable all others to excel.  Once formalities were concluded, the Year 9 students began their orientation, with classes for Year 9 and 13 students beginning tomorrow.  We remind our Year 9 students to only bring with them what they need for the day and to make sure that all of their possessions are clearly labeled.  Regulation hats are available at the school shop and can be worn in Terms 1 and 4.  We also recommend bringing a water bottle and sunscreen with warm temperatures set to continue.
