Jacob Priddey selected for New Zealand Junior Olympics Team

The Hamilton Boys’ High School Athletics Team returned home yesterday from the National Secondary Schools competition with 8 medals, including 2 gold medals won by Jacob Phillips.  In addition, Jacob Priddey will be travelling to Sydney next year to compete in the Junior Olympics.  Teacher in Charge of Athletics Mr Rodney de Klerk reports on the team’s performance over the weekend in Dunedin.

On Thursday the 6th December the twelve-strong Hamilton Boys’ High School Athletics team departed to take part in the NZSSAA National Track and Field Championship held from the 7th to the 9th in Dunedin.  The trip started off on a challenging note when our flight was delayed and the connecting flight was cancelled, consequently leaving us to find our way to Dunedin from Christchurch in the early hours of the morning.  The athletes were resilient and the extra ten hours of travelling did not deter them.  The beginning of the competition was promising, with some of the athletes qualifying for finals and semi finals on the Saturday morning.  As the competition progressed it seemed that the majority of the athletes from our school were going to achieve personal best times and distances and we were certainly not let down.  Overall, our team gained 8 medals and reached many finals achieving impressive results.  Some notable outcomes were from Jacob Priddey, Jacob Phillips and Blair Pennell.  Jacob Priddey gained two bronze medals and has been selected to go to the Junior Olympics held on the 18 of January, 2013 in Sydney. Jacob Phillips gained two gold, two silvers and a bronze medal.  Blair Pennell gained a bronze medal with a superb finish in the 1500m race.  The athletes were exemplary in their performances and in their representation of our school.  It was a pleasure having been part of this small group of athletes who performed with excellence.
