Hugo McMullen makes New Zealand Optimist Sailing Team
Year 9 student Hugo McMullen had an amazing regatta in Picton recently, in difficult conditions, and ended up 3rd New Zealand boy. This exceeded expectations and his family and our school are incredibly proud. The result from this regatta is combined with three others to give a New Zealand ranking for the 2017-2018 season. Hugo is currently 5th which means he has been selected, along with the other top four sailors, to represent New Zealand at the Optimist World Championship in Cyprus in August. Here he will be up against the worlds best - 250 sailors representing 60 countries. This is an awesome experience which he will spend the next 5 months training for.
He was also awarded the NZIODA Sportsmanship Trophy in Picton.
Sailing has been a huge challenge for Hugo living in Hamilton but his commitment has never faulted - training at the lake during the week and traveling to Auckland every weekend for racing and regattas. Thanks to Victoria McMullen and Lamirana Photography for this information.
