House Singing and Haka Competition 2016

As part of Spirit Week 2016, the House Singing and Haka Competition was held today in Gym 1, and it would be fair to say that noise limits were well and truly tested in what is one of the most enjoyable events on the school calendar.  The judges were Mr Sean Hamana for the Haka, and Mr Bryan Bevege and Mr Josiah Abbott for the singing.  All are hugely experienced in their areas of expertise and we thank them for their contribution to today.  Once again, the smallest House had the biggest Haka, and Argyle House took out this competition with a very powerful and controlled performance.  Of course there is no truth in the rumour that they were drilled for hours and hours!  After scoring their almost inevitable sixth place in the Haka, Steel House kept waiting for their name to be called in the singing competition, and once third place was called and they still hadn't been named, Steel House dared to dream that they might have won a major event.  Sadly, it was not to be, and their wooden-spoon running-mate Tait House was declared Singing Champion for 2016.  The coveted pie award for Best Conductor was fittingly won by Tait House's conductor Rawiri Kapa-Hakeney.  All of this was background noise, however,  with the real showdown taking place between the Staff Band and the Prefects.  The Staff have won comfortably in the past two years, and were looking good (Blues-Brothers good, in fact, led by a rocking-it Mr Shannon Brown) to make it a three-peat, until the Prefects, rallied by a mike-toting Matthew Handford, shouted their way to victory with an admittedly rousing rendition of the Proclaimers anthem "I would walk 500 miles".  While the judging was taking place, we were all shown how it was really done by the HBHS Barbershop Quartet singing "You keep coming back  like a song".  Once again we thank our judges, and a huge congratulations and a thank you to Matua Mita Graham, Mr Adrian Botting, and compere-extraordinaire Mr James Sutherland for such a brilliantly-run morning.  The full results lists follows:
