Hamilton Boys' High School 1st XV Rugby Team Secure Place in Top 4
Hamilton Boys’ High School hosted a very physical game of rugby against Rotorua Boys’ High on Wednesday 26 August. Hamilton won the game 27-10, which means that HBHS have secured a place in the top four of the 2009 National School Boy Rugby competition.
Rotorua came to play, and caught Hamilton a little by surprise – they didn’t kick the ball as the Wesley side had done, keeping it in hand instead. As a consequence, during the first 10 minutes Rotorua scored two early tries.
Hamilton kept their cool despite the early reversal, and applied the system of play that they have been developing since the beginning of the 2009 season. As one of the support crew noted; when you have a process where you trust the boys and trust their ability and understanding, panic doesn’t set in.
Hamilton managed to get hold of the ball, look after the ball, and produce some of their season’s best rugby in the 25 minutes before half time. HBHS scored four tries in that period, excluding Rotorua from the win. The half time score was 24-10, which Hamilton advanced upon once in the last 40 minutes. Turning with the wind in the second half allowed them to play territory and maintain their emphatic lead.
We anticipate an exciting contest for first place in the competition over the coming weeks.
