HBHS wins U20 NZSS Road Race Championship

HBHS recently won the NZSS U20 Road Racing Championship.  The boys involved with the senior A team time trial team are Corby Price (captain), Danyon Inwood, Stephen Brunskill, Nick Reddish and Sam Dobbs.

The boys’ team’s trial time was 22.05.  This is the second consecutive year that HBHS has won the teams’ time trial trophy.  We broke the record that has been standing for 23 years by 17 seconds and the second place team was 25 seconds behind us.  Prior to the race, the boys felt confident that they could win, while their school coach Brian Fleck estimated their margin to beat the record would be only two seconds.  We are expecting to have a very strong team again next year.

Road Race Results

Ryan Christensen came third in the U17 category, while Corby Price achieved second place in the U20 division.  (Corby is only 16 and will race in the same grade next year.)  Both categories had 80 plus riders in them.  Corby was closely marked by other riders in the race, which made it difficult for him to pace himself the way that he would have preferred.  However, he managed to put in a strong sprint at the end.

Both of Corby’s team members from HBHS were out of the race before finishing the first kilometre, due to a mechanical failure and a crash.

Team members are extremely helpful in a road race as they can be used to chase break-aways, so that the team captain doesn't need to.  This is what the other teams were doing.  All the other boys were in very close contention during this competition, so HBHS Cycling's future is looking great.

Criterium

Sam Dobbs got first in the U16 category.  Corby Price gained first in the U20 category.  All the other boys in very close contention.  Both Corby and Sam won the Criterium the year before in U17 and U15. They share the same personal coach, Jarrod Alty.

The past two years have been the best years HBHS cycling has ever had.  We placed fifth in the overall schools’ trophy.   This is very good for HBHS, as we have an extremely small team in comparison to other schools. We are proud of our results, and grateful to our parents and the staff that have supported us this year.
