HBHS win Waikato Secondary School Futsal Tournaments

On Tuesday 14 March HBHS sent two sides to compete in the 2017 Waikato Secondary Schools Futsal Tournament. This is an annual competition now into its second year of running. This year the competition was held outdoors at the Gallagher Hockey Centre by Hamilton Lake. Both our junior and senior squads were comprised of students who will represent the school at National Tournament in late March. The teams equipped themselves well on the day to string together an impressive run of results. A definite rise in the overall standard of Futsal being played was noticeable this year and no doubt this tournament experience, as a precursor to NZSS nationals, is a good build up for our players, especially looking ahead to the tougher games that will be played on the National stage in Wellington. In terms of game results, both sides progressed through pool play unbeaten, top of their respective groups, and with impressive goal differences. In the knockout phase of the competition the senior team came from a losing position to eventually see off local rivals St. Paul’s in the semi-final. The junior team post group play more comfortably overcame a Matamata College side in their semi-final to move into the final. Two hard fought final games saw HBHS eventually prevail. The seniors came from being several goals down at various points in the match to eventually defeat a determined Fraser High team in their final 5-3. The juniors in a cagier affair overcame a resolute Hillcrest High School side 2-1. Both squads are pleased to have retained their Waikato Secondary School’s titles for another year after winning last year's inaugural WSS tournament and wish to thank all coaching staff, parent helpers and supporters who made the day run smoothly.
