HBHS and the Gallagher Great Race

On Sunday, the Gallagher Great Race of 2014 was contested on the Waikato River, and our HBHS crews competed in the schools event with distinction.  A new Under 18 combination was tasked with defending HBHS's title in the A final and did so, scoring an impressive win over Mt Albert Grammar School.  The Under 17 crew only just missed out on taking out the B final, just losing to Auckland Grammar's Under 18 crew.  HBHS Rowers who were not involved on the water took part in the Million Metre Erg competition, which they went on to win.  HBHS Old Boys Caleb Shepherd, Shaun Kirkham and Alex Bardoul then helped the University of Waikato win the Great Race and the Harry Mahon trophy by some distance.  The crew rowed with black armbands to honour the memory of another HBHS Old Boy and previous member of the University of Waikato crew, Andrew Healey, who was tragically killed in a car accident earlier this year.

In the lead-up to the Gallagher Great Race, HBHS had the privilege of hosting the visiting Harvard University Crew last Tuesday which was a wonderful opportunity for our senior rowers to mix and mingle with the Harvard crew members, as well as hear about life abroad and studying at one of the most prestigious universities in the world.  The Harvard rowers were then presented with an HBHS oar to take back home to mark their visit here.
