HBHS Win Regional 7s Competition

The Waikato Secondary Schools Touch Competition, held at Cambridge this year, gave HBHS a chance to field three senior teams.  The winners of the Waikato 7s gain automatic entry into the Condor 7s National Championship.  The HBHS teams were unable to include the three members of the National Secondary Schools Rugby team; opportunities for up-and-coming players were plentiful, and the boys performed well on the day.

The top and third HBHS teams played in the same pool.  At the end of the four games, the top team had achieved a place in the semi-finals.  They met St John’s in the semi, and played Cambridge in the final.  This consisted of a ten minute each way game.  After seven minutes, HBHS was 17 – 0 down.  The boys composed themselves just before half time, and turned the game around from that point forward.  The final score was 19 – 17.

Greg Kirkham noted that the day was very well organised, and that everyone who attended enjoyed themselves.  It was great to have the boys back playing 7s again, and we now have to wait until the second to last week of the year, when the selection of the Condors team to play in Auckland will be made.  The teams would like to acknowledge and thank Barbara Clarke, who managed all three groups of boys, as well as John Steel, Nigel Hotham and Greg Kirkham for their coaching.  The parents who support these games are always welcome, and always great sports – we thank them for their interest in the progress of these players.
